Mental Health Affinity Group: Networking Session 5
In this MH Affinity Group session, participants learned about a quality assessment and improvement process in school mental health activities using an on-line tool developed by the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care, the Mental Health Planning and Evaluation Template (MHPET). Additionally, participants learned about how the tool has been used in Massachusetts and Illinois.
The quality assessment and improvement process is conducted by a multidisciplinary team comprised of a diverse group of the following: mental health providers, program managers, health care providers (e.g. nurse practitioner, school nurse), and/or school staff (e.g. counselors, teachers, administrators).
Objectives: By the end of the session, participants were able to:
- Define quality as it pertains to school mental health (SMH)
- Describe five steps in a continuous quality assessment and improvement (QAI) process
- Explain how to set up a QAI team
- Demonstrate how to use the MHPET for assessing SMH activities, programs and services along the full continuum of prevention through treatment
- Describe how to identify improvement targets and create an action plan for ensuring a quality SMH program
- Describe how Massachusetts and Illinois implemented a QAI process at a state or regional level
