Quality Rating and Improvement Systems for Early Care and Education

A number of states are developing Quality Rating and Improvement Systems (QRIS) to assess and improve the quality of early care and education programs for children ages birth to five and older. This brief reviews the essential elements of a QRIS; summarizes evaluations of its impact on the quality of care and child outcomes; and identifies key considerations for developing a QRIS.
