Proposition 36: Five Years Later
Proposition 36 was a policy initiative adopted by California to divert individuals convicted of drug possession offences to mental health treatment instead of prison. This five-year update reports on reductions in the rate and number of drug-related offenders in the California prison system without an increase in violent crime. A discussion of the impact of incarceration on youth and communities is included in this report.
