This article provides evidence for the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to meet the needs of infant and young children's mental health. While ecological and transactional models currently inform systems of care for this age group, it is important to also take a mental health approach in order to identify risk factors and issues earlier on to prevent later health problems. In particular, this article addresses the need for creating integrated systems to care for maltreated infants and young children.
