Two Successful Models for Addressing Truancy

Date:
July 13, 2011 - 1:30pm - 2:45pm
Presenter(s):
Jeff Coomber, Randy Evetts, and John Rosiak

Two Project Directors will describe step-by-step how their SS/HS sites developed different approaches for truancy prevention and intervention. The Pueblo, CO site will share how its SS/HS site works with a truancy courts review system where community advocates and community agencies provide the court weekly information to address the comprehensive needs of the student, resulting in improved grades, attendance, and behavior. The Kern County, CA site will present how it developed its comprehensive truancy prevention/intervention effort including assigning School Resource Officers the primary responsibility to target habitually truant students. A key component of these efforts are district-wide School Attendance Review Boards (run by the SROs) where the students and their parents meet with staff from the schools, community agencies, and SS/HS staff to discuss attendance, behavior issues and available resources.
