Behavioral Health Screening in School-Based Health Care: Principles & Practice

This workshop explores practical ways to integrate depression and substance abuse screening into school-based health care. After reviewing the epidemiology, it discusses the evidence-based practice of depression and substance abuse screening, the difference between screening and assessment, and overcoming barriers to routine clinical screening.

Objectives:

  • Define screening
  • Describe one theory and four attributes of effective clinical screening tools
  • Describe depression and substance abuse epidemiology
  • Distinguish screening tools from assessment instruments
  • Select effective depression and substance abuse screening tools and discuss their implementation in school-based health care
