This journal emphasizes the interconnectedness of research, policy, training and practice in the field of mental health promotion, and the opportunities to make progress in all these areas through global dialogue, collaboration and action. It was designed for those with a clinical, professional, academic or personal interest in promoting mental health in schools, including administrators, advocates, counselors, health care providers, policy makers, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, school principals, sociologists, teachers, youth and families. This inaugural issue introduces the concept of school mental health promotion, reviews reasons for its growth, discusses challenges being encountered, and presents strategies and ideas for the growth of the field.
