Addressing Racism and Cultural Competence in Schools and Communities

Date:
August 5, 2009 - 3:30pm - 4:45pm
Presenter(s):
Carlos Perez (Hillsboro, OR), Jodi Korzenowski (Duluth, MN), and Ron Slaby

The issues of institutionalized racism and alienation of students of color result in significant inequity in educational outcomes, as well as in discipline and attendance problems in school systems throughout the country. Districts often feel helpless in addressing these issues. The work of creating equitable and excellent schools is fundamentally about changing ourselves and thereby our relationships with others. What this means is that those aspiring to coach for educational equity must begin by reflecting critically on their own identity and integrity in doing this work. In this session, you will learn about emerging best practices for schools and methods for developing ongoing courageous conversations about race and equity.
