Suicide Prevention in Rural Communities

This presentation provides information on a variety of strategies that states and communities are implementing to prevent youth suicide in rural communities. During the presentation, discussion focuses on promising approaches in rural schools, practical tips for overcoming obstacles and challenges in suicide prevention in rural settings, and the Suicide Prevention Toolkit for Rural Primary Care developed by the Western Interstate Consortium for Higher Education (WICHE) in partnership with the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. This toolkit assembles best practices in suicide prevention in a pilot-tested package that can be practically implemented in rural primary care offices.

The presenters are Mimi McFaul, Psy.D., Associate Director of the WICHE Mental Health Program and Peter A. Wyman, Ph.D., Director of the School and Community-Based Prevention Laboratory, Department of Psychiatry, University of Rochester Medical Center.
