Beyond the First Exposure: The Physical, Mental, and Emotional Toll of Violence

In the first of a series of 6 Webinars focused on children exposed to violence, Andrew Garner, MD, FAAP-a general pediatrician and co-author of the AAP policy statement and technical report on toxic stress-will provide information on the physiologic effects that can result from exposure to violence, particularly in regards to brain development. Information on the physical, mental, and behavioral health impact that a child experiences will also be discussed. Denise Dowd, MD, MPH, FAAP will provide an overview on the current efforts at the Academy to incorporate this new understanding in the care provided in the medical home to children exposed to violence.
