Military Families: Impact on Children and Families

Date:
March 16, 2010 - 3:45pm - 5:00pm
Presenter(s):
Suzanne Masland (Caledonia, VT) and Nancy Macias Smith (TAS)

With the recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Americans have witnessed a sharp increase in the amount of troops leaving their homes and families for deployment. Military deployment takes a toll, not only on the service member, but on their families as well. We are aiming to provide information about the three stages: pre-deployment, deployment and post-deployment, and introduce effective strategies, and a list of available resources to support schools in understanding the effects of war on children. We present the experiences of two of our current Safe Schools/Healthy Students grantees that have experienced the effects of military deployments within their communities and school districts. Their stories discuss a variety of mental health strategies and practical approaches to help school personnel, administrators, and educators better understand the impact of war on the mental health and well being of children and their families.
