Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills associated with the core areas of social and emotional competency. Research clearly demonstrates the significant role of SEL in promoting healthy development and academic achievement of all students by reducing problem behaviors and emotional distress that interfere with learning and growth. Research indicates that SEL programming significantly raises test scores while it lowers levels of emotional distress, disruptive behavior, and alcohol, tobacco, or other drug use. SEL is thus an effective approach for addressing SS/HS elements, by making learning environments safer, reducing substance abuse and disruptive behavior, and promoting mental health.
